Building Domestic Capability Today to Prepare for the Disruptions of Tomorrow
RICHMOND, Va., September 8, 2026 – Phlow Corp., a U.S.-based advanced pharmaceutical contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO), today recognized National Essential Medicine Shortage Awareness Day (NEMSAD), reaffirming its commitment to building the domestic capabilities needed to create a more secure and resilient medicine supply.
Drug shortages remain a persistent challenge across the U.S. healthcare system, affecting patients, providers, hospitals, and emergency responders. While progress has been made, vulnerabilities remain. Manufacturing disruptions, natural disasters, geopolitical instability, quality issues, and dependence on limited sources of medicines and their critical ingredients can quickly disrupt supply when Americans need it most.
“National Essential Medicine Shortage Awareness Day reminds us that preparedness cannot begin when a crisis arrives,” said Robby Demeria, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer at Phlow Corp and Chair of the Alliance for Building Better Medicine. “A hurricane, a manufacturing disruption, a public health emergency, or geopolitical instability can quickly expose vulnerabilities in our medicine supply. America must have the domestic capabilities and critical ingredients in place before they are needed. That is how we build resilience into the system and protect America’s medicine cabinet.”
Phlow was born from a crisis in America’s pharmaceutical supply chain and built to help create generational change. Since its founding, the company has worked alongside government, industry, healthcare, academic, and nonprofit partners to build a modern foundation for how medicines and their critical ingredients are developed and manufactured in the United States. Today, Phlow’s Virginia facilities integrate the development and manufacturing of small molecule active pharmaceutical ingredients from early-stage development through commercial-scale production. With advanced technology, domestic infrastructure, and a world-class team, Phlow is expanding America’s ability to develop and manufacture medicines here at home while strengthening supply security at the source.
Preparedness also means having critical ingredients available before disruption occurs. Phlow supports national preparedness through the Strategic Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient Reserve (SAPIR) program, which provides a strategic reserve of critical pharmaceutical ingredients to strengthen resilience and help protect against future supply chain disruptions.
“Securing America’s medicine supply is not the work of one company or one sector. It requires sustained collaboration across government, industry, healthcare, academia, and communities. Together, we can build lasting national capability and a medicine supply designed for resilience,” said Demeria.
That collaborative approach continues to take shape in Virginia and across the country. As a founding member of the Alliance for Building Better Medicine, Phlow is working alongside more than 55 public and private partners to strengthen America’s pharmaceutical manufacturing ecosystem. In 2026, the Alliance announced a $15.97 million investment from the U.S. Economic Development Administration to launch the End-to-End Commercialization Project, led by Civica, Inc. The initiative will establish an integrated domestic commercialization pathway connecting domestically sourced key starting materials, API manufacturing, finished dose formulation and manufacturing, regulatory approval, and ultimately the delivery of medicines to patients.
The project represents the kind of sustained public-private collaboration needed to move beyond responding to individual shortages and toward building lasting national capability. For Phlow, that means continuing to advance pharmaceutical development and manufacturing in America, secure critical ingredients, support strategic reserves, and work alongside partners committed to strengthening the nation’s medicine supply.
National Essential Medicine Shortage Awareness Day is observed annually on September 8 to raise awareness of the ongoing impact of medicine shortages on patients, healthcare providers, and communities across the country. The observance underscores the need for long-term solutions that strengthen the resilience and security of America’s medicine supply.
This September 8, Phlow stands alongside organizations across the country working to #StopTheShortages and advance a more secure, resilient medicine supply that strengthens America’s preparedness for future disruptions.
